Bombay Jayashri, also known as Bombay Jayashri Ramnath, is an acclaimed Indian Carnatic vocalist and composer. She was born on October 12, 1965, in Kolkata, India. Jayashri belongs to a family of musicians, and her mother, Smt. Seetha Subramaniam, was her first guru (teacher) in music.
Jayashri started learning music at a young age and went on to receive training from several renowned musicians. She is known for her soulful renditions and rich tonal quality in her singing. Her expertise lies in the Carnatic music genre, which is a classical music style from South India. Jayashri has also experimented with blending Carnatic music with other genres, such as Hindustani classical, folk, and world music.
Apart from her vocal performances, Jayashri is a skilled composer and has composed music for various films and dance productions. She gained international recognition for her collaboration with film director Ang Lee on the soundtrack of the movie “Life of Pi,” for which she received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
