Alam Lohar and Arif Lohar are father and son, both of whom are renowned Punjabi folk singers from Pakistan.
Alam Lohar was born on July 1928 in Achh, a small village in Gujrat District, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He started his music career in the 1940s and became known for his unique and powerful voice. He was particularly known for his renditions of Punjabi folk songs, including the famous “Jugni” which became a cultural symbol of Punjab. He played the traditional musical instrument called the “Chimta“, which is made of two iron rods and played by striking them together to create a unique sound. Alam Lohar passed away on July 3, 1979, but his legacy continues to be celebrated and his songs remain popular to this day.
Arif Lohar, born on April 1, 1966, is Alam Lohar’s son and started his music career in the 1980s. He is also a Punjabi folk singer and has continued his father’s legacy by performing and popularizing Punjabi folk music. Arif Lohar is known for his fusion of traditional Punjabi folk music with modern instruments and styles. He is particularly known for his rendition of “Jugni” which became popular worldwide after he collaborated with the Indian music composer, Mukhtiar Sahota in 2005. Arif Lohar continues to be an active musician and has released several albums and performed in various concerts around the world.
